Pat Thatcher became a Volunteer Visitor for Somerset Sight in 2001 after seeing an article in her church magazine and has visited Fred, now 91, for 8 years.
Born and bred in Somerset, Fred lives in Nether Stowey. He has a military background, like many others we support, having worked in RAF’s Royal Observer Core and later qualified as a civil engineer and helped build a ramp from the House of Commons.
Fred’s sight was initially affected by a stroke and has also developed macular degeneration. After his wife passed away Fred felt in need of regular company and support despite his loving family visiting when they can.
Fred was introduced to Pat and they hit it off straight away. He really looks forward to her cheerful company; ‘she helps me feel part of the local community now that I can’t go out by myself anymore. I value the regular company greatly and don’t know how I would manage without my volunteer visitor.’
Pat enjoys her visits to Fred; ‘we have lots of laughs, he is very outgoing and interesting and is a lovely man. We both love gardening and Fred likes to talk about all the prizes he used to win at village shows. I’d recommend anyone with the time to become a volunteer visitor as it’s so rewarding.’
